McTague uses the same argument that every abuser ever has used. The world is big and bad and the abuser is protecting us from what surely would happen, were we on our own.
I just read the Bessner piece in Harpers that Daniel linked to in the post. Great article. It would sure be nice if even some small number in power in Washington read, mark, learn and inwardly digest the wisdom of those advocating restraint and cooperation.
‘The Atlantic’ which published this piece by McTague was once a respectable magazine. It has become an apologist for American Empire and it features such writers to soothe the anxieties of its elite audience. Those anxieties are well justified however, as it is becoming increasingly clear that we are nearing “game over” for the US ‘rules based order.’
China, Russia, and the associated BRICS will find it not only increasingly easy to ignore US dictated rules, but will find it is also profitable to do so. The coming recessions (or worse) in the US and Europe will only accelerate the trend to ignore these fading powers and their neocolonial agendas.
