Expanding NATO is in nobody's interest, including Ukraine and Georgia. It is most certainly not in the interests of the United States. It is very likely that the US would not keep all of our "commitments" (whether they are actually required by the text of Article V of the NATO treaty or they are simply asserted to be the US's obligations under the document, which no one who talks about it appears to have actually read) as it stands right now. It is only going to exacerbate the problem if the alliance is expanded into more countries which are incapable of defending themselves and which are likewise the most likely states to provoke a counter-response from Russia.
Stability should be the objective of the United States, not revisionism. Revisionism will simply knock the world order out of equilibrium, and lead to great power conflict in which *everyone* loses, especially the world's smaller and weaker states.
Encouraging further conflict is entirely the point.
Europe should take NATO completely off the table - as in dissolve the thing. It's only raison d'etre is to sell weapons.
Well, that, and intervene along with the US in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Libya...did I miss anything?
