Trump probably watched clear and present danger recently and thought if Harrison Ford can do it why can't I

I do not understand for the life of me why Washington doesn't recognize that the War on Drugs is an abysmal failure on all fronts. Drugs won the Drug War, accept it and try to minimize harm by decriminalizing or legalizing them. Only social interventions are going to stem the tide of opiate addiction.

Rather than play eleven dimensional International Whack-A-Mole with sources, dealers, users, cops, prosecutors, judges and an ever-expanding kaleidoscope of different kinds and classes of recreationals, it would be a far more productive use of resources to ask why Americans are so desperate to get high.

We've all seen street junkies, skid row winos and the like. We all know how this can end and getting there looks like the furthest thing from fun. So how meaningless do humans' lives have to be, how desperate do they have to be to get out of their heads, that they would even think of going down that road?

Nobody of influence and authority wants to ask that question, besides a few platitudes and bromides. I suspect that this is because they know that they might not like the answers.

And often when Republicans talk about this, they have an AMLO-be-damned attitude where the opinions of the Mexican government and people don't really matter when it comes to an intervention against the cartels, with the implicit understanding they believe AMLO is either a cartel flunky or such a pansy-ass he can't do anything. But obviously this flagrant violation of Mexican sovereignty would create (really expand) generational distrust in Mexico against the United States. So when the dust settles and the American public and policy elites discover that the intervention was ultimately ineffective and worthless, whoever is governing Mexico will be disinclined to work with us. It's hilarious that the nationalist right, with their self-proclaimed realism and skepticism of intervention, have managed to clamp on to this spectacular joke.

Recall Trump wanting to acquire Greenland ... he needs to think much larger than cartels at the border. It's too long to ever manage effectively anyway. Invade and march all the way through Panama to the Columbia border. There you would only need about a 200 mile wall! Easy-peasy. And we'd get back "our" canal in the deal. All those pesky Central American countries have caused us trouble for decades. Solve it--take them over and rule from DC with an iron fist so we can be sure to make them as happy and healthy as we are. (Why we are so drug dependent in this country is such a mystery.) I'm sure Trump can promise them great things being in the MAGA fold, and he'd no doubt drool over all those beach resorts coming into his portfolio.
