In light of the news that Elliott Abrams is being given the Iran envoy job, here is an excerpt from The Jakarta Method about him: “Put simply, his job was to defend U.S.-allied right-wing regimes to the press, and shield them from criticism coming from appalled human rights groups. Abrams called the accounts of the slaughter in El Mozote, including those published in The New York Times, communist propaganda. This is still the most famous atrocity of the Salvadoran civil war, but it was only a tiny fraction of the violence unleashed on civilians.” (p.225)
This week I saw him on CSPAN being "questioned" by Sen Bob Menendez, who posed a series of True/False queries obviously tailored to make some point that was not obvious to me. My first impression: Menendez is re-habilitating Abrams right before my eyes. Is the deal that Abrams agrees with all of the senator's talking points and Menendez agrees not to mention those unpleasant slaughter reports? Both these guys are repellent.
Yes, Abrams was given very favorable treatment at that hearing. Unfortunately, I fear that Abrams was rehabilitated in D.C. quite a while ago. Menendez wanted to broadcast his support for regime change in Venezuela, and the only problem that members of the committee seemed to have with the administration's policy is that it has not been efficient enough in toppling the government
