Trump will soon be picking his running mate, and by this time next week we will know which of the finalists he chose. I briefly reviewed the foreign policy records of the three men reported to be on the short list in my new column to get some idea of what direction Trump’s foreign policy might take. I am not holding out any hope that we will get better (i.e., more restrained, less militaristic) policies in a second Trump term, but depending on who serves as his vice president U.S. foreign policy could get dramatically worse. All three of the choices (Rubio, Burgum, and Vance) are unappealing for different reasons, and I assume that any one of them would end up either deferring to Trump’s terrible decisions or goading him to make disastrous ones.
