W.J. Hennigan comments on Trump’s ineffective and illegal war in Yemen:

Mr. Trump, like every other president throughout the global war on terrorism, is wrong to assume that overwhelming military superiority will usher in a swift and decisive conclusion. Unable to dislodge the Houthis with air power alone, he will soon confront the same no-win decision that bedeviled his predecessors in the Middle East: retreat or escalate.

Trump will probably defer this decision as long as he can. We shouldn’t underestimate our government’s ability to wage a prolonged, fruitless military campaign without making any changes. The U.S. has been bombing Houthi targets for more than fifteen months without achieving any of its stated goals, but there is no meaningful pressure on the Trump administration to stop what it is doing. Neither is there significant pressure to escalate. Everyone can see that Trump’s war is a failure, but almost no one cares enough to oppose it. The bombing must stop. When will Congress finally get its act together and stop it?
