The U.S. Shouldn't Support an Illegal War of Aggression
The attack on Iran is a crime. Should our government assist the perpetrator in committing that crime? I think not.
Reid Smith tries to have things both ways in this article for Foreign Affairs:
There is little doubt that the world is better off without a nuclear-armed Iran. And the United States should always support its allies and partners. But those countries’ wars of necessity [bold mine-DL] should not become Washington’s wars of choice.
I certainly agree that the U.S. shouldn’t join the war, but it makes no sense to argue that the U.S. should support it. The attack on Iran is a crime. Should our government assist the perpetrator in committing that crime? I think not.
The U.S. is wrong to support another country’s war of aggression. Israel’s attack on Iran is entirely unnecessary. Iran isn’t building nuclear weapons, and Israel isn’t acting in self-defense. It seems likely that the Israeli government chose to attack now because Netanyahu wanted to derail the negotiations and to shore up his own political position. That is many things, but a war of necessity is not one of them.
