The Stupidity of Trump's Iran Policy
Trump doesn’t want a diplomatic solution. He demands capitulation and threateans bombing if he doesn’t get it. It’s no wonder that the Iranian government doesn’t want to talk to him.
This report from The Wall Street Journal perfectly captures the stupidity of Trump’s Iran policy in the first sentence:
The U.S. is pressing to hold direct nuclear talks with Iran, U.S. officials say, as the Trump administration seeks an ambitious goal: dismantling Tehran’s nuclear program.
Iran has rejected holding direct talks with the U.S. as long as “maximum pressure” sanctions are in place, and they have said publicly that there is no point to negotiating with the U.S. if dismantling the entire nuclear program is the goal. A month ago, Iran’s mission to the U.N. said, “However, should the aim be the dismantlement of Iran’s peaceful nuclear program to claim that what Obama failed to achieve has now been accomplished, such negotiations will never take place.” It doesn’t get much clearer than that.
Trump doesn’t want a diplomatic solution. He demands capitulation and threateans bombing if he doesn’t get it. It’s no wonder that the Iranian government doesn’t want to talk to him. What is there to talk about when the U.S. position is so unreasonable?
