The Illegal War in Yemen Must End Now
The war in Yemen is unauthorized and illegal. Why is there no demand in this letter to halt the bombing?
Sens. Merkley and Paul wrote a letter to Trump about the ongoing illegal war in Yemen:
A bipartisan pair of senators is warning the White House that recent US strikes on the Houthis in Yemen risk “emboldening” the Iranian-backed group and flouted the law regarding congressional oversight of military operations.
The senators’ letter is better than nothing, but it falls short in several ways. They state clearly that Congress has never authorized military action in Yemen, but they don’t directly challenge the president’s authority to order the attacks. The senators say that “Congress should be briefed about the recent strikes against the Houthis and the total cost expected to be incurred by this campaign at the American taxpayer’s expense.” That’s all very well, but this amounts to accepting the president’s illegal war and waiting for the president to tell them about it.
