The Charade of the Iran 'Talks'
This isn’t a serious diplomatic initiative on the administration’s part.
The administration’s special envoy has reassured the Israeli government that the U.S. position on the nuclear issue is every bit as extreme as theirs:
During those meetings, Witkoff stressed that the Trump administration's goal on Iran is to resolve the nuclear crisis with through diplomatic means and ensure Iran will no longer enrich uranium [bold mine-DL].
The Iranian foreign minister said this week that an agreement was possible as long as the U.S. didn’t make unrealistic demands, and he included a demand to halt enrichment as one of those. The Iranians aren’t going to change their minds about this, and the administration is inflexible on this point. I’m not sure why either side is bothering with the charade of these “talks” in Rome when there is no real chance of a breakthrough.
