No, Trump Didn't Campaign on a Foreign Policy of Restraint

Trump did nothing of the kind.

Dan Drezner makes up a story about how Trump campaigned on foreign policy last year:

After all, for all of U.S. President Donald Trump’s bluster, he campaigned for office in 2024 on a foreign policy of restraint.

Trump did nothing of the kind. To believe that Trump ran on a pro-restraint message requires either paying no attention to most of what Trump said or not knowing what foreign policy restraint is. To the extent that Trump had anything specific to say about foreign policy during the campaign, he mainly ran as a hawk. You can applaud or condemn this, but you can’t pretend that he ran on a completely different platform than he did.
