Gaza and Our Sick Foreign Policy
When we hear the stories from witnesses to the carnage and atrocities in Gaza, we remember that our government has aided and abetted these horrific crimes.
Abdullah Hammoud, the mayor of Dearborn, Michigan, was recently interviewed by Mother Jones, and he hit on one of the main reasons why many Americans are so angry and disgusted with the Biden administration over Gaza and Lebanon:
The feeling of betrayal still exists. This idea that our administration, the leaders in this country have chosen [Israeli Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu over the American people still persists. And I think it’s not just the feeling that Dearborn residents carry, but it’s the feeling that the broader American public carries.
Americans with friends and family in Gaza and Lebanon feel this sense of betrayal most keenly, and they have the strongest reasons to be outraged by what the administration has done. There are also many other Americans across the country that see U.S. support for the wars in Gaza and Lebanon as a profound betrayal of American values and a disaster for American interests. We can all see the devastation and massive loss of life that our government has been supporting and enabling for more than a year. It is natural for decent people from every part of the country to be appalled at what our government has done with its unconditional support for a year of slaughter and starvation.
