Foreign policy always gets short shrift in presidential elections. Most voters don’t pay that much attention to it, they don’t usually base their votes on it, and as a result the candidates tend to neglect talking about it unless they are directly asked to explain their positions. Most media outlets likewise spend little time covering the foreign policy views of the candidates, and the coverage they do produce tends to be superficial. If foreign policy comes up at presidential debates at all, the exchanges between the candidates are rarely informative and the moderators’ questions are not very challenging. That leaves voters mostly in the dark about some of the president’s most important responsibilities.
