Biden's Obsession with a Bad Normalization Deal Won't Die
Pursuing Saudi-Israeli normalization now is madness.
The Biden administration is pushing the same bankrupt policy ideas in the Middle East and pretending that they are some sort of solution:
White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said at the World Economic Forum on Tuesday that the Biden administration's strategy for post-war Gaza is to link normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia to the creation of a pathway for the establishment of a Palestinian state.
The administration’s pursuit of Saudi-Israeli normalization was misguided and bad for U.S. interests from the start, but continuing to pursue it after everything that has happened in the war in Gaza is madness. Even if the Saudi government were still interested in normalization, it would be much harder for them to agree to this in light of what Israel has done to Gaza. The current Israeli government can’t be trusted as a partner in this process, and Netanyahu and his allies would renege on any commitments they might make. The U.S. has absolutely no credibility left to broker a deal, and no serious Palestinian leader would want any part of this insulting charade.
