One of the great weaknesses of Biden’s presidency has been his heavy reliance on a small circle of loyalist advisers. His advisers typically don’t tell the president things he doesn’t want to hear, they don’t challenge him, and they shut out dissenting views. That can allow the Biden White House to appear to function smoothly for long stretches, but it also makes it much harder for the president to change course after he has made serious blunders or truly terrible policy decisions.
