A Pointless Summit in Beijing
Like other summits that Trump has attended, this one seems to have been long on spectacle and short on substance
The president’s summit with Xi Jinping yielded nothing of importance:
U.S. President Donald Trump left China on Friday with no major breakthroughs on trade or tangible help from Beijing to end the Iran war, despite two days spent heaping praise on his host, Xi Jinping.
Like other summits that Trump has attended, this one seems to have been long on spectacle and short on substance. The president enjoys the stagecraft of high-level meetings, but when it comes to securing meaningful agreements he usually comes away empty-handed. He came to this summit already badly weakened by his failed illegal war and his abysmal approval ratings, and he leaves with practically nothing to show for the effort.
